You Control Your Mind, Not Events
An emperor commanded legions and provinces, yet Marcus knew his real dominion was smaller and surer: his own mind.
The Stoics drew one line: between what is up to us — judgment, choice, response — and what is not: health, reputation, wealth, other people, the past.
“Things themselves touch not the soul … but the soul turns and moves itself alone.” Events knock at the door; only the mind decides what enters.
To fret over what you cannot control is to hand your peace to fortune. To spend that energy where your effort actually reaches is precision, not passivity — and it makes you nearly unshakeable.
Spend yourself where it counts
Sort the situation in two
Divide what's in front of you into what is up to you (your judgment and action) and what is not (outcomes, others, the past). Be honest about the line.
- What here is actually mine to move?
- What am I trying to control that isn't?
Withdraw from the not-yours
Stop spending worry on what you cannot change. Note it, set it down, and turn your attention away.
Pour it all into the yours
Take the freed energy and put it entirely into your own response — the one thing fortune can't touch.
Consider that everything is opinion, and opinion is in thy power. Take away then, when thou choosest, thy opinion, and like a mariner who has doubled the promontory, thou wilt find calm, everything stable, and a waveless bay.
