The Nash Equilibrium

A Nash equilibrium is a set of choices where no one can do better by changing their move alone. It is not where the game should end up — it is where it will.

Picture rush hour. Everyone leaves at the same time, everyone sits in traffic, everyone hates it. Yet if you alone leave earlier, you just lose sleep while the jam re-forms around everyone else. The pattern holds because no single driver gains by breaking it.

That is an equilibrium: a resting point of mutual best responses. Once there, the game stops moving — not because anyone is happy, but because every one-person escape route is worse.

Notice what this does not say. Stable is not the same as good. A team can be locked into pointless meetings, a family into the same holiday argument, an industry into a price war — with everyone trapped by everyone else's expected behavior.

Equilibria explain why bad patterns outlive everyone's complaints about them: unilateral change gets punished; only coordinated change works.

Ask who could improve alone

For any stuck pattern, test each player: could they do better by changing only their own move? If nobody can, you've found the equilibrium — and the reason it persists.

Stop attempting unilateral heroics

If you alone stop answering late-night emails while everyone else keeps sending them, you pay the price and the culture survives. Don't confuse martyrdom with strategy.

Move together or move the payoffs

Escaping a bad equilibrium takes a coordinated jump — a team-wide rule, a shared start date — or a payoff change that makes the new behavior individually worth it.

If a bad pattern keeps surviving, it isn't because nobody wants change. It's because nobody can change alone.
