The land before the city

People of the Inside Water

For thousands of years before any street was laid, the Duwamish and their Coast Salish relatives lived along Puget Sound — an inland sea of salmon, cedar, and tide.

Long before Seattle had a name, the Duwamish — the Dkhw'Duw'Absh, the People of the Inside — lived where two rivers ran down into the salt water of Elliott Bay. They were one nation among many Coast Salish peoples ringing the shores of Puget Sound.

Life ran on the tide and the salmon runs. Cedar gave them longhouses, canoes, baskets, rope, and clothing; the Sound and rivers gave salmon, shellfish, and waterfowl in abundance. Winter villages of great cedar-plank longhouses stood where downtown and the Duwamish River are today.

This was never empty wilderness. It was a tended homeland, its prairies kept open with fire, its beaches and streams each known and named by generations. The settlers who stepped ashore in the 1850s were latecomers to a very old and living place.

To begin Seattle's story with the Denny Party is to start the tape halfway through. The city is young; the ground it stands on had already been home for far longer than anyone can easily count.

Chief Si'ahl of the Duwamish and Suquamish

The Man the City Is Named For

Seattle is one of the few major American cities named for a Native leader — Chief Si'ahl, a Duwamish and Suquamish headman known for his stature, his oratory, and his uneasy diplomacy with the newcomers.

Si'ahl, whose name settlers wrote as Sealth and then Seattle, was born around 1786 and grew into a leader of both the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples. Contemporaries described a tall, powerfully built man with a voice said to carry across a crowd.

As settlers arrived, he chose engagement over war. He kept ties with early Seattle figures such as the physician David Doc Maynard, and worked to keep the peace even as his people's world was being remade around them.

There is a poignant detail in the record: by some accounts Si'ahl was uneasy that the town had taken his name, holding a belief that his rest would be disturbed each time it was spoken after his death. He was later baptized a Catholic and given the name Noah.

He died in 1866 and was buried across the Sound near Suquamish. The city that bears his anglicized name grew into a metropolis he could never have imagined — carrying his memory, and its debts to his people, into every mention of the word.

A treaty kept, a speech invented

The Words He May Never Have Said

The most quoted Native American speech in the world is attributed to Chief Seattle. Most of its famous words were written by other men, long after he died — while the treaty that took his people's land was very real.

In January 1855, at Mukilteo, Chief Seattle and other leaders signed the Treaty of Point Elliott, ceding vast lands in exchange for reservations and promises. Displacement followed fast: within a decade Seattle even passed an ordinance pushing Native people out of the young town.

That history is documented and grievous. The beloved speech is another matter. The poetic passages about the web of life and the ashes of the ancestors — endlessly reprinted on posters — were not recorded from Chief Seattle's mouth.

A settler, Dr. Henry A. Smith, published an ornate English version in 1887, more than thirty years after the fact, from notes and memory. Then in the early 1970s a screenwriter, Ted Perry, rewrote it again for an environmental film, adding imagery the chief never uttered.

The honest position is to hold both truths at once: the man and the treaty were real; the famous ecological sermon is of disputed authorship. Revering invented words is its own quiet erasure — the surest respect is to tell the difference.

Founding

The Denny Party lands, 1851

New York-Alki

On a wet November day in 1851, a small band of settlers stepped off a schooner onto a windswept point and gave their soggy new home a grand, hopeful, half-joking name.

The Denny Party — led by Arthur Denny, with the Boren, Bell, and Terry families among them — sailed north from Portland aboard the schooner Exact and came ashore at Alki Point, on the western edge of present-day West Seattle, on November 13, 1851.

They named the spot New York-Alki. Alki is a Chinook Jargon word meaning by and by, or eventually — so the name was a wry promise: a New York, in time. The ambition outran the reality of a dozen people in the rain.

That first winter was brutal — cold, wet, and exposed to the open Sound. The point took the full weather off the water, and the settlers soon realized the site was too shallow and too battered for the deepwater port they dreamed of.

The joke name aged strangely well. The huddle of cabins at Alki did become the seed of a great city — just not on that spot. Within months they would go looking for better ground across the bay.
