Meaning is load-bearing

A Why to Bear Any How

In the camps, survival often turned on one thing: whether a person still had a reason to live.

Frankl watched who gave up first: those who lost their sense of a future. With nothing to live for, they could not endure.

“He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how.” Frankl borrowed Nietzsche's line; the camps proved it.

A why is concrete: a person waiting for you, a work only you can finish. It pulls you forward through the how — the pain, the tedium, the fear.

Meaning does not remove suffering. It gives suffering a direction, and a direction is what makes it bearable.

Shock, apathy, and after

The Three Phases

Frankl traced the prisoner's mind through three phases — and the last one surprised him most.

First came shock: a cold curiosity, and the 'delusion of reprieve' — the belief that one would be spared at the last moment.

Second came apathy: a merciful blunting of feeling that left the prisoner indifferent to horrors he could not have borne.

The third came after release: not instant joy but depersonalization, bitterness, and disillusionment — the slow work of learning to feel again.

Naming the phases did not spare him from them. It gave him a foothold: he could watch his own mind rather than be swept away.

The man who gave up

Losing the Future

Prisoners who stopped believing in a future were the ones who died. To lose tomorrow was to lose today.

Camp life, Frankl wrote, was a 'provisional existence of unknown limit': no one knew if it would ever end.

A man with no future goal was doomed. He let himself decline, lay where he fell, and nothing could move him.

Frankl tells of a composer who dreamed the war would end for him on March 30th. When the date passed without freedom, he sickened; on March 31st he died.

The cure was a future to live toward: a task waiting, a person waiting, a reason ahead that made the present endurable.

The Last Human Freedom

They could take everything — home, family, name, even his body. One freedom remained: how he met it.

Stripped of every possession and every right, Frankl found one freedom no captor could reach: what he became inwardly.

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances.”

Between what happens to you and how you respond, there is a space. In that space lie your growth and your freedom.

The few who walked the huts comforting others, giving away their last bread, were proof that this freedom held.
