The first phase was shock. On arrival, a cold curiosity and a strange, protective disbelief — the 'delusion of reprieve,' the conviction that surely, at the last moment, one would be spared.

The second was apathy: a merciful emotional death. Feelings blunted, and the prisoner grew indifferent to horrors that once would have been unbearable — a shell that let the soul survive.

The third came after release, and it surprised him most. Liberation brought not instant joy but depersonalization, bitterness, and disillusionment — the slow, hard work of learning to feel and hope again.

Knowing the phases did not spare Frankl from them. But naming them gave him a foothold: a way to observe his own mind rather than be swept away by it.
