Know Your BATNA
Your best alternative if this deal dies is the true source of your leverage. Power at the table is decided before you sit down at it.
BATNA answers one question: if this collapses, what happens next? Another buyer, a second offer, or keeping what you already have — that alternative is your floor.
It converts fear into arithmetic. A negotiator who needs the deal leaks that need into every pause. A live fallback lets you weigh offers coldly.
So leverage is built, not bluffed. Counterparts can smell an invented alternative; a real one changes your posture and your price without a word.
Build your floor before you sit
Write down your real alternatives
Before any talks, list what you would actually do the day after a no-deal — with names, numbers, and dates. Vague comfort is not a BATNA; a plan is.
- What do I do on day one if this dies?
- Which alternative could I improve this week?
Strengthen the best one
Treat your BATNA as a project, not a fact. Advance the second offer, qualify the backup supplier, get the other bid in writing — before the first meeting, not after it goes badly.
Convert it into a walk-away number
Translate your alternative into the worst deal you would still sign. Write that number down and keep it in front of you — nothing offered in the room should beat it downward.
The negotiator who can afford to lose the deal is the one who usually doesn't have to.
