Review just as memory fades

The Forgetting Curve

Hermann Ebbinghaus showed that new memories decay fast at first, then slower — and that each well-timed review flattens the slide. Forgetting is not the enemy of learning; it is the schedule for it.

In the 1880s, Hermann Ebbinghaus memorized lists of invented syllables and tested his own recall over hours, days, and weeks. The pattern he charted became the forgetting curve: memory drops steeply just after learning, then levels off. Most of what will be lost is lost early.

He also found the remedy. Each time a fading memory is revisited and relearned, the curve restarts from a higher point and falls more gently. Reviews spaced at growing intervals — soon, later, much later — buy far more retention than the same reviews bunched together.

This is the spacing effect, one of the oldest and most reliable results in the study of memory. Modern spaced-repetition systems are simply engineering built on Ebbinghaus's insight: catch each memory just as it starts to slip.

Ride the curve, don't fight it

Review soon after first contact

Revisit new material within about a day, while the steep part of the curve is working against you hardest. A short early review saves hours of relearning later.

Stretch each interval

Space the next reviews at growing gaps — a few days, a week, a month. If recall takes a little effort at review time, the timing is right; effortless review came too soon.

Let a system keep the calendar

Use a spaced-repetition app or a simple card-box rotation so the schedule, not your mood, decides what gets reviewed today. Memory management is too important to leave to memory.
