Think and Grow Rich

The Starting Point
The premise everything rests on

Thoughts Are Things

Hill spent twenty years interviewing the richest men in America looking for a formula. What he found underneath all of it was a claim about thought itself.

“Thoughts are things, and powerful things at that, when they are mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire for their translation into riches, or other material objects.”

Notice the conditions. A thought alone is inert. It becomes a force only when it is fused with a specific aim, a refusal to quit, and desire hot enough to organize a life around.

Edwin C. Barnes wanted to be Thomas Edison's business partner — not work for him, partner with him. He had no money, no introduction, and no qualifications. He arrived at Edison's lab looking like a tramp and took a floor-sweeping job to stay near the man. Five years later he had the partnership.

Barnes had nothing but a definite thought he refused to trade for anything smaller. That is the whole book in one man.

Give a thought weight

1

Name the one thing you actually want

Not a vague improvement — one definite outcome you could recognize the moment it arrived. If you can't say it in a sentence, it isn't yet a thought that can do work.

  • Say it in one sentence
  • Would you know it if it arrived?
2

Refuse the near-miss

Barnes could have accepted a good job at Edison's lab. Decide in advance which acceptable substitute you will turn down, so you don't drift into it.

3

Stand where the thing can happen

Barnes swept floors to be in the room. Put yourself physically and professionally where your outcome is possible, then wait there and keep working.

Barnes did not have a better plan than anyone else. He simply had a thought he would not let go of, and stayed where it could find him.
