The One Long Argument

All life is one family tree

Descent with Modification

Species are not fixed and separately created: they descend one from another, changing over time. All life shares a common ancestry.

Before Darwin, naturalists held that each species was separately and permanently created. Darwin proposed something stranger: today's forms descend, with modification, from earlier ones.

He rarely used the word “evolution.” His phrase was “descent with modification” — small inherited changes accumulating, over vast time, into new forms.

Follow the branches back far enough and they converge. “Probably all the organic beings which have ever lived on this earth have descended from some one primordial form.”

The Breeder's Proof

Darwin opens not in the wild but in the farmyard. Breeders, choosing which animals reproduce, reshape species before our eyes.

Pigeon fanciers had bred birds as different as the pouter, the fantail, and the tumbler — yet all descend from a single wild species, the rock-pigeon.

The power lies not in one step but in the patient accumulation of tiny preferred differences. “The great power of this principle of selection is not hypothetical.”

If a human breeder can do this much in a few centuries, Darwin asks, what could nature do, selecting over millions of years?

Variation is the raw material

No Two Alike

Look closely at any wild population and no two individuals are identical. These small differences are the raw material natural selection acts on.

Every measurable feature — size, colour, beak, bone, behaviour — varies from individual to individual. The variation is everywhere.

Some of that variation is inherited. The heritable differences are the ones that matter for evolution.

“These individual differences are of the highest importance for us, for they afford materials for natural selection to accumulate.”

Too many are born

The Struggle for Existence

Every species produces far more offspring than can live. The result is an unrelenting struggle for existence.

Unchecked, any species — even the slow-breeding elephant — would cover the earth. Yet populations stay steady: most born must die before breeding.

Darwin took the insight from Malthus: “… the doctrine of Malthus applied with manifold force to the whole animal and vegetable kingdoms.”

The struggle is often invisible. “We behold the face of nature bright with gladness,” Darwin wrote — forgetting that the birds singing round us live by destroying other life.
